If you own a villa in Sanur, keeping the pool clear is part of daily life — especially once the rainy season rolls in and algae starts moving fast. The short answer: tablets are easiest for steady day-to-day maintenance, granules give you a quick shock treatment when things turn green, and liquid hypochlorite is handy for topping up between tests. Pick one as your base product and keep the others on hand, and your water will stay safe without much fuss.

Types of Pool Chlorine

Tablets (usually trichlor or dichlor) dissolve slowly over 24–48 hours. You drop them into a floating feeder or a dedicated chlorinator basket on the skimmer. In Sanur villas where the pump runs most of the day, this gives you a very even, low-maintenance level of disinfection. They are also the least messy option if you store them in a dry cupboard rather than under the stairs where it gets humid.

Granular chlorine (calcium hypochlorite or sodium hypochlorite crystals) hits hard and fast. You broadcast it across the surface after brushing the walls, then run the filter for at least an hour. This is what you reach for after a heavy rain that stirs up sediment from the bottom, or after a big gathering when organics spike.

Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite solution) is the mildest of the three. It mixes instantly, so there is no waiting period before swimmers get back in. Many pool technicians in Bali use it for routine top-ups because it is easy to measure with a small jug.

How Much Chlorine Do You Actually Need?

The golden rule: test first, dose second. A basic OTC test kit tells you your free-chlorine level. Most kits target roughly 1–3 ppm for everyday swimming. If you are doing a shock treatment you will push that higher temporarily, but always follow the ratio printed on the product bag — do not guess by eye.

A few Sanur-specific notes. PDAM tap water can arrive with varying levels of residual chlorine, and well water often has different mineral content; both affect how quickly your added chlorine gets consumed. If your villa uses a rooftop tank fed by rainwater, organic matter from leaves can eat through chlorine faster than you expect. Test every morning during the rainy season rather than once a week.

  • Test at mid-morning, after the sun has been up for an hour or two.
  • Add chlorine to circulating water, never to a still pool.
  • Wait at least four hours before anyone swims after a granule shock.

Free Chlorine vs Combined Chlorine

When chlorine kills bacteria and organic matter it does not simply vanish — it bonds to those molecules and becomes 'combined chlorine' (also called chloramines). Free chlorine is the active disinfectant; combined chlorine is the spent residue. A healthy pool should have most of its chlorine in the free form.

In Bali's humidity, sweat, sunscreen, and even dust blowing off the rice fields get into the water more quickly than in a dry climate. That means combined chlorine builds up faster. If your test kit shows high combined chlorine but low free chlorine, that is the signal to do a proper shock treatment rather than just dropping in another tablet.

Why Your Pool Smells Like a Swimming Pool

Here is the counterintuitive part: a strong chlorine smell usually means your water is NOT well maintained. That sharp, stinging scent comes from chloramines — the combined-chlorine by-products described above. A properly balanced pool should barely smell at all.

If you open the villa gate and hit a wall of chemical odour, check your combined-chlorine reading first. The fix is almost always a full shock cycle followed by thorough brushing and filtration, not adding more tablets on top of what is already there.

Safety note: never mix different chlorine products or add chlorine near other chemicals (algaecide, pH adjusters) while they are still concentrated. If you ever smell a sharp gas-like fume after combining products, stop immediately, ventilate the area, and call a professional before touching anything else.

Storing Chlorine Through Bali's Heat

Sanur sits in the tropics year-round. Even in the 'dry' season, afternoon temperatures push past 33 °C and humidity hovers around 80 %. Chlorine tablets and granules degrade faster in that environment, especially if they sit in direct sun or in a sealed plastic bin under the pool deck where heat builds up.

Store dry chlorine in its original sealed bag inside an airtight container, kept in a cool, shaded spot — a locked cupboard in the garage or a dedicated shelf away from the kitchen works well. Keep it at least two metres from any algaecide, acid, or ammonia-based cleaner. In older villas where storage means a corner of the garden shed, make sure the roof does not leak during the monsoon; even a small drip will clump your granules and start a slow exothermic reaction.

  • Keep the lid on between uses; do not leave bags open overnight.
  • Check expiry dates every month — degraded chlorine is weaker and can release fumes.
  • If tablets have turned white-powdery or crumbled, discard them safely (flush with plenty of water) rather than using them.

Questions

Can I use regular household bleach instead of pool chlorine?

Household sodium hypochlorite is chemically similar to liquid pool chlorine, but concentrations differ widely by brand and batch. It also contains additives that can cloud the water or damage the filter. For a villa pool in Sanur, stick to products labelled for swimming pools and follow the manufacturer's dilution instructions.

How often should I shock-treat my pool in Bali?

As a rough guide, once every one to two weeks in the dry season and weekly during the rainy months, or whenever combined chlorine climbs above about 0.5 ppm. The real trigger is your test-kit reading, not the calendar — heavy rain, leaf fall from the frangipani trees, or a big party will all push you toward an earlier shock.

My pool turns green after a few days even though I add tablets daily. What am I missing?

Usually it is one of three things: the tablet feeder is clogged so the dose never actually dissolves; circulation is poor because the pump runs only a few hours; or the pH has drifted high (above 7.8), which makes chlorine far less effective. Test the pH first, clean the skimmer basket, and make sure the pump runs at least eight hours a day. If it still recurs, send me a photo on WhatsApp and I will walk you through it.
