Most Sanur villa pools do well on eight to twelve hours of pump runtime per day. The exact number depends on your tank size, how hot the week has been, and whether the rainy season has dumped leaves and insects into the water. Below is a practical guide to dialing in your timer so the water stays clear without burning through electricity.

How Much Water Your Pump Needs to Turn Over

A pool pump does not "clean" the water in one pass. It pushes the full volume through the filter, back into the basin, and repeats. One complete cycle is called one turnover. In a temperate climate, one turnover per day is usually enough. In Sanur, where afternoon temperatures sit above 30 °C most months, algae and bacteria multiply faster, so you want at least 1.5 turnovers every 24 hours.

To estimate your need, measure the pool (length × width × average depth) to get litres or cubic metres. Divide that by the pump's flow rate printed on its nameplate. The result tells you how long one full turnover takes. Multiply by 1.5 for a tropical baseline.

  • Small villa pool (≈ 30 m³): roughly 6–8 h of pumping for 1.5 turnovers
  • Medium pool (≈ 50–70 m³): roughly 8–12 h
  • Large or freeform pools: ask your technician to calculate from the actual flow rating

Running Hours in a Tropical Climate

Sanur sits right on the coast, so sea spray, salt-laden air, and fine dust from nearby construction all land in an uncovered pool. Add the dry season's intense UV and the wet season's daily downpours, and your filter is working harder than it would in, say, Melbourne or Berlin.

During the rainy months (roughly November to March) expect extra organic load: fallen leaves, insects, and runoff from the roof and garden wash into the basin. You may need to add two or three hours of runtime on top of your usual schedule until the water clears again. If you notice a greenish tinge after a heavy storm, that is your cue to extend the cycle rather than just adding more chlorine.

Setting Up Your Pool Pump Timer

Most Sanur villas have either a mechanical dial timer or a small digital controller mounted next to the pump. The goal is to split the total running time into two blocks so the water is circulating both when you are awake and during the quiet night hours.

A common setup: 4:00–8:00 am and 4:00–8:00 pm. That gives four hours each side, eight total, with a gap in between where the pool sits still and any remaining particles settle before the next pass. Adjust the start times by an hour if your household routine shifts.

Check the timer at least once a month. Bali power cuts (whether planned PDAM maintenance or a grid fault) can reset cheap timers back to zero. A quick glance at the display or a listen for the relay click saves you from waking up to a stagnant pool.

  • Write the chosen schedule on a sticky note inside the electrical box
  • If the villa has a variable-speed pump, set it to medium speed rather than full speed for most of the cycle

Cutting Energy Costs Without Losing Clarity

Electricity in Bali is not cheap, and a single-phase pool motor drawing 1–2 kW for twelve hours adds up over a month. The good news: you do not need to run longer; you need the system to work more efficiently.

Backwash or clean the cartridge filter every two weeks in the dry season and weekly during the wet season. A clogged filter makes the pump labour harder and reduces flow, so you end up running it longer for less benefit. Keep the skimmer baskets empty daily—ten seconds of effort that prevents an hour of extra pumping later.

If your villa draws water from a well rather than PDAM mains, the mineral content can scale the filter faster. Rinse the cartridge with plain water (not chlorine) when you remove it, and let it air-dry before refitting.

Daytime or Nighttime Running?

There is no single right answer, but here is how most Sanur owners split it. Running at night keeps ambient temperature lower around the pump motor, which extends its life, and it avoids the midday UV breaking down your chlorine before it has done any work. It also means the hum of the motor does not disturb neighbours or your own morning coffee.

Running some hours in daylight lets you visually check the water while the pump is cycling—if there is a leak, a stuck valve, or debris trapped in the skimmer, you will spot it immediately. A good compromise: four hours overnight (say 10 pm–2 am) and four to eight hours in the late afternoon when the sun is dropping and you are likely to be outside by the pool anyway.

Questions

My pool still turns green even after ten hours of pumping. What else should I check?

Runtime alone will not fix a chemistry problem. Test free chlorine (aim for 1–3 ppm), pH (7.2–7.6), and total alkalinity. If the filter is overdue for cleaning, backwash or swap the cartridge first. Persistent cloudiness can also point to a failing sand bed or a small crack letting well water with high iron into the system—worth having a technician inspect.

Does the rainy season change how long I need to run the pump?

Yes. Heavy rain stirs up organic matter from the roof, garden, and surrounding soil. For one to two weeks after sustained downpours, add two to three hours to your normal schedule and clean the skimmer more often. Once the water runs clear again, drop back to your baseline so you are not overworking the motor unnecessarily.

Can I just leave the pump on 24/7 to be safe?

It is possible but wasteful and hard on the bearings and seals. A continuously running motor in Sanur's humidity and heat will wear faster than one that gets regular rest cycles. Stick to the eight-to-twelve-hour window unless a specific algae bloom demands extra time, and let the pump cool between sessions.
