In most of Europe or North America you can flush a sheet of toilet paper without thinking twice. In a typical Sanur villa with a septic tank and narrow drainage lines, that same sheet starts a slow clog that will cost you a pump-out within weeks. A small printed reminder by every toilet, plus a lidded waste bin, prevents the vast majority of blockages I see on my rounds here.

Why Your Sanur Villa's Plumbing Is Different

Many older villas along Jalan Raya Sanur and the smaller lanes were built before modern PVC drainage was standard. The pipes are narrower, sometimes ceramic, and they run into an underground septic tank rather than a municipal sewer. PDAM water pressure also fluctuates day to day, so there is no strong flush to carry solids through long runs of pipe.

Add the salt-laden sea air that accelerates corrosion on metal fittings, and you have a system that simply cannot handle the volume of paper and non-biodegradable items that guests from Western countries expect to flush. What works in a Berlin apartment will back up in your Sanur bathroom within two or three days.

What Should NOT Go Down the Toilet

The rule for guests is simple: if it is not human waste or urine, it goes in the bin. In practice this means the following items must never be flushed:

  • Toilet paper – even the thin single-ply kind sold at local warungs
  • Wet wipes and baby wipes (they do not break down)
  • Feminine hygiene products (pads, tampons)
  • Cotton buds, cotton balls, dental floss
  • Hair, bandages, small plastics
  • Food scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds
  • Cooking oil or grease poured down the drain

If you are seeing slow drains, gurgling sounds, or an overflow near your garden, snap a quick photo and send it over on WhatsApp – I will take a look and let you know what the job involves before any work starts.

Suggested Memo Text for Your Guests

You do not need a long legal notice. A short, friendly card taped to the wall next to the toilet works best. Here is wording I have seen work well in Sanur guesthouses and private villas:

"Please place all used tissues, wipes, and personal-care items in the bin beside the toilet. Our septic system cannot handle paper or non-biodegradable materials, and blockages cause unpleasant overflows into the garden. Thank you for helping us keep things running smoothly!"

The Bin That Saves Your Septic Tank

A memo alone is not enough if there is no convenient place to throw things away. Put a small lidded bin (a 5- or 8-litre pedal bin looks tidy) directly beside every toilet. Line it with a thin plastic bag so cleaning staff can swap it out without touching waste.

Make the bin look intentional – match its colour to the bathroom tiles or choose a simple white or black model. If it looks like an afterthought, guests will ignore it. If it looks like part of the design, they will use it without thinking.

Languages & Tone for International Guests

Sanur attracts long-term tenants from Australia, Europe, China, Japan, Korea, and Russia, among others. Print your memo in English and Bahasa Indonesia at minimum; add Chinese or Japanese characters if those make up most of your guest base. Keep the tone helpful rather than scolding – you are explaining how the local system works, not issuing a rule.

If your villa has a housekeeper who speaks limited English, a laminated card with a small illustration (tissue going into a bin, crossed-out tissue over a toilet) is clearer than any paragraph of text. I am happy to talk through layout and wording if you want something custom-printed before your next guest arrives.

Questions

Can I flush thin single-ply toilet paper if my villa has a modern septic tank?

Even with a newer tank, the narrow drainage pipes in most Sanur villas will still clog over time. The safest habit is to put all paper in the bin regardless of thickness. If you have had a full plumbing upgrade with wide-bore PVC lines, ask your plumber to confirm before changing the rule for guests.

What do I do if a guest already flushed wipes and the toilet is backing up?

Stop using that bathroom immediately. Do not pour chemicals or hot water down it, as this can damage seals and worsen the blockage. Call a local plumber – send a photo of the backup on WhatsApp so they can advise whether it needs a plunger, a drain snake, or a full pump-out of the septic tank.

How often should I service the septic tank in a Sanur villa?

It depends on how many people use the house and how much non-waste material gets in there. As a general guideline, have the tank inspected at least once a year and pumped when the level rises. A technician can check the sludge layer from photos of the inspection port and tell you whether a pump-out is due.
