Living in a Sanur villa means your maintenance schedule shares space with the Balinese religious calendar. Nepi shuts down the whole island for a full day; Galungan and Kuningan pull local workers away for several days around them. Here is how to plan repairs so you are not left with a dripping pipe or a green pool on a holiday nobody will fix it.

The Balinese Calendar at a Glance

Bali runs on its own lunisolar calendar (the pawukon), which adds dozens of religious observances on top of the national Indonesian public holidays. For a villa owner in Sanur this matters because most plumbers, pool technicians, electricians, and even hardware-shop staff take those days off without notice.

The dates shift every year relative to the Gregorian calendar, so a screenshot from last year is useless. Before booking any non-urgent work, check the current-year Balinese holiday list that circulates in expat community groups or ask your technician directly when they will be unavailable.

  • National holidays: Nyepi, Independence Day (17 Aug), Christmas, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha.
  • Balinese-specific: Galungan, Kuningan, Saraswati, Nyepi, Tumpek series (five days spread over the year).
  • Local temple ceremonies can add one or two extra quiet days in specific kelurahan (villages) around Sanur.

Nepi: The 24-Hour Silence

Nepi is the Balinese New Year — a full day of silence. No engines, no construction noise, no travel, no cooking fires, no phone calls in many households. In practice, for you as a villa owner it means zero tradespeople available and most shops closed.

If a pipe bursts at 6 a.m. on Nepi morning, nobody is coming to turn off the PDAM supply valve outside your gate. Your best protection is simple: know where your main water shut-off is, keep a bucket and towels by the kitchen sink, and make sure your rooftop tank has enough reserve from the previous evening so a short outage does not leave you without hot water for the next day's shower.

Older Sanur villas with concrete septic tanks are less affected, but if you rely on a well pump, check that the float switch works before Nepi so an unexpected power dip does not flood the utility room while everyone is meditating upstairs.

Galungan and Kuningan: A Longer Quiet Window

Galungan arrives every 210 days on the Balinese calendar and is followed ten days later by Kuningan. Together they create roughly two weeks of reduced availability. Many workshops close for three to five days around Galungan; pool-chemical suppliers in Sanur may run skeleton shifts or close entirely.

This is the window when I see the most 'my pool turned green over the weekend' calls. The chlorine tablets were due for replacement, the shop was closed, and the sea-air humidity plus warm water did the rest. If your villa sits near the beach road, salt spray accelerates corrosion on ladders and skimmer baskets, so a quick visual check before Galungan saves a bigger clean-up after.

Practical step: top up your pool chemicals (chlorine granules, algaecide) at least one week before Galungan. Do the same with any plumbing spare parts you keep under the sink — washers, O-rings, a length of flexible hose.

Timing Your Repairs Around the Calendar

The golden rule is simple: book non-emergency work at least five working days ahead if it falls within a fortnight of any major holiday. During the rainy season (roughly November to April) demand spikes because old roofs leak, PDAM mains break more often, and septic systems get overloaded. Add a holiday on top of that and your slot can slip by a week or more.

If you are planning a larger job — replacing a corroded copper line, re-plastering the pool, overhauling the septic tank — schedule it in the dry months and steer clear of the Tumpek series, which clusters several observances into a single month and can eat two full weeks of labour availability.

Keep a small calendar note for yourself: mark Nepi, Galungan, Kuningan, and the nearest national holidays. When you call or message your technician, mention the date range so they can confirm their own availability before you commit.

What to Do If Something Breaks on a Holiday

First, safety. If you smell gas near the water heater, shut off the supply valve and ventilate the room — do not flick switches or use open flames. If an electrical fault is close to standing water (pool pump, outdoor socket), stop and call a licensed electrician; do not wade in. Never mix chlorine with any other chemical to 'speed up' a fix; the resulting gas can injure you within minutes.

For a straightforward plumbing leak during a holiday: locate the local isolation valve (usually under the kitchen sink or at the utility tap by the gate) and turn it clockwise until it stops. Place a bucket underneath. Photograph the damage clearly — this helps when you send it to your technician on WhatsApp the next working day.

For a pool that has gone cloudy or green over a long holiday closure, resist the urge to shock-dose blindly. Test the pH first if you have a kit, then wait for your technician's advice. Over-chlorinating in hot Sanur sun can degrade the liner and make the water harder to balance later.

  • Gas smell → shut valve, open windows, leave the area, call a professional.
  • Electrics + water → cut power at the breaker, do not touch wet surfaces, call an electrician.
  • Chemical mixing → stop immediately, ventilate, rinse skin/eyes with clean water, seek medical help.
  • Minor leak → isolate the valve, contain the drip, photograph, message your plumber when they are back.

Questions

Can I still get emergency plumbing work done during Nepi?

In practice, no. Nepi is a full-day observance across Bali; most tradespeople will not travel or use tools. If a burst pipe threatens serious water damage, your best option is to close the main PDAM or well supply yourself and arrange the repair for the following morning. For anything involving gas or electrics near water, call the relevant emergency service rather than attempting a DIY fix.

How far in advance should I book pool maintenance before Galungan?

Aim for at least one week ahead so your technician can complete a full clean, chemical balance, and equipment check while shops are still open. Top up your own chlorine and algaecide stock around the same time. If your villa has been sitting empty, add an extra day for a thorough brush-down of the walls — salt air from Sanur's beach road leaves mineral deposits that look worse after ten warm days without circulation.

Do Balinese holidays affect PDAM water supply in Sanur?

PDAM (the municipal water utility) generally maintains its schedule, but planned maintenance or pressure drops sometimes coincide with holiday weekends when fewer staff are on site. If you rely on a rooftop tank, make sure it is topped up the evening before any long holiday stretch. Old villas with single-pipe layouts are more vulnerable because there is no second feed to fall back on.
