If your kitchen tap is putting out cloudy, yellowish, or sulphurous-smelling water, it is almost never one single problem. In Sanur villas the usual culprits are a dirty rooftop tank, iron-rich well water, or old pipe work stirring up sediment after a heavy rain. The good news: once you identify which of the four issues below you are dealing with, the fix is usually straightforward and does not require tearing up your plumbing.

Cloudy or Milky Water (Turbidity)

Fill a clear glass from the cold tap and watch for thirty seconds. If tiny bubbles rise to the surface and the water clears within a minute or two, that is simply dissolved air coming out of solution – harmless and common when PDAM pressure fluctuates overnight. If the cloudiness stays, settles as a fine sandy layer at the bottom, or looks grey-brown, you have suspended sediment.

In Sanur this most often happens right after the rainy season starts. Heavy downpours push silt into shallow wells and into the inlet of PDAM lines. Your rooftop storage tank then recirculates that silt every time the pump kicks in. Old galvanized or PVC pipes in pre-2005 villas can also shed rust flakes and scale when flow changes suddenly.

Before buying anything, run both hot and cold taps full blast for three to five minutes. Open the outdoor hose bib too if you have one. That flushes loose material out of the line. Then inspect the mesh screen on your tank inlet valve; it collects debris and is easy to clean with a brush under running water.

  • Glass test: clears in 60 s = air, no action needed
  • Sandy residue = sediment; flush pipes and clean tank inlet screen
  • If it returns within a day, the source (well or PDAM main) is still delivering silt – wait it out or call us to check the line

Yellow or Brown Tint (Iron)

A faint golden-yellow colour that leaves orange rings around the tap aerator and stains white tiles is almost always dissolved iron oxidising as it hits air. Many Sanur properties draw from a private well because PDAM pressure on the east coast is unreliable, and coastal aquifers here carry naturally higher iron than mainland sources.

The tint usually worsens after the tank has sat unused for a weekend or holiday period. Stagnant water lets iron precipitate onto pipe walls, then every burst of flow knocks it loose again.

You can confirm by running the tap into a white bowl: if the water starts clear and slowly turns amber over ten minutes, that is oxidation happening in real time. A simple inline sediment-plus-iron cartridge filter at the point where the tank feeds the house will catch most of it. If the staining is heavy or the well itself is the problem, we can discuss whether an oxidation-and-filtration setup suits your villa.

  • Orange/amber stain on fixtures = iron oxide
  • Worse after tank sits idle; flush before use
  • Point-of-entry iron filter handles moderate levels; severe cases need a dedicated system

Rotten-Egg Smell (Hydrogen Sulfide)

That unmistakable sulphur or rotten-egg smell comes from hydrogen sulfide gas produced by anaerobic bacteria. In a Sanur setting the typical chain looks like this: septic-tank effluent percolates nearby, traces of sulphate reach the groundwater, and any stagnant pocket – your rooftop tank being the prime suspect – becomes a breeding ground for those bacteria.

The smell is usually strongest in hot water because heat drives the dissolved gas out faster. It can also be more noticeable in the morning when the tank has been full and still overnight.

Do not try to 'fix' this by dumping chlorine tablets or bleach into the tank without knowing what else is in there. Mixing unknown chemicals with residual disinfectant from PDAM supply can create irritating fumes. Stop using that tap, ventilate the area, and call a professional to inspect the tank, pump, and line before adding anything.

  • Hot tap smells worse than cold = H₂S off-gassing
  • Check tank lid seal; open tanks let in dust and organic matter
  • Never mix cleaning chemicals in an unventilated tank room – stop and call us

Bacterial Growth and Biofilm

Bali's warmth and humidity make rooftop tanks a perfect petri dish if they are sealed poorly or cleaned less than once a year. A slimy film on the inside walls, a musty or 'swampy' odour (different from rotten eggs), or water that tastes faintly metallic all point to biofilm rather than simple sediment.

In older villas where the tank was installed in the 1990s and never opened since, the buildup can be several millimetres thick. Flushing will not remove it; the tank needs to be drained, scrubbed, and disinfected properly.

If you notice any of these signs alongside a family member getting recurring stomach upset after drinking straight from the tap, treat it as a priority. We can drain, clean, and disinfect the tank on site, then fit a UV steriliser at the point of use so the water is safe even if the source quality varies with the season.

  • Slimy tank walls + musty smell = biofilm, not just dirt
  • Annual (minimum) tank cleaning is essential in tropical heat
  • UV at the tap gives a safety net without changing your whole system

Which Filter Actually Solves Your Problem?

The most common mistake we see is buying an expensive multi-stage under-sink unit when the real issue is a dirty tank inlet screen, or vice versa – installing a basic carbon cartridge when the well is pumping iron and sulphide together. The right fix depends entirely on which of the four problems above you have identified.

As a rough guide: a 5-micron sediment cartridge handles silt and rust flakes; an iron-removal media filter tackles the yellow tint; activated carbon reduces chlorine taste and some organic odours; and a UV lamp kills bacteria without adding chemicals. Often two stages are enough for a typical Sanur villa, but sometimes the answer is simply 'clean the tank and flush the line' before any hardware goes in.

We do not sell filters as a package. We look at what you actually have – photos of the tank, the pipe material, the well depth if applicable – and recommend the minimum setup that solves your specific water. You get a clear quote from those WhatsApp photos before anyone touches a wrench.

  • Identify the problem first (glass test, smell, staining)
  • Match the stage to the contaminant – don't over-buy
  • Send us photos; we'll tell you exactly what you need and why

Questions

Is cloudy tap water dangerous to drink?

If it clears within a minute or two, it is just air bubbles and perfectly safe. If it stays milky or leaves sandy residue after sitting, it means suspended particles are getting into your supply. That is not immediately toxic, but prolonged ingestion of fine sediment can irritate the gut, and the same conditions allow bacteria to thrive. Flush the system, clean the tank inlet, and if it persists call us to trace the source.

My well water has always been slightly yellow. Is that normal for Sanur?

A faint golden tint is common with coastal wells because of naturally occurring iron. It becomes a problem when it stains fixtures, tastes metallic, or builds up in your heater and pump over time. A simple inline iron filter at the point where the well feeds your tank will keep the colour down without changing the taste. Send us a photo of the stained aerator or tile and we can gauge how aggressive the iron load is.

How often should I have my rooftop tank cleaned in Bali?

At minimum once a year, and ideally twice if your villa sits near open ground or if you notice any change in smell or clarity between seasons. The tropical heat accelerates biofilm growth, and a single heavy storm can dump leaf litter and dust through an unsealed lid. A proper drain-scrub-disinfect cycle takes about two hours on site and prevents most of the issues described above before they start.
