Black or grey streaks along your tile lines are almost always mould, mineral deposits, or simply aged grout breaking down. In Sanur's salt-laden coastal air and long rainy season, the problem shows up faster than you'd expect. Most grout can be brought back with a proper cleaning routine; when the material itself is crumbling, re-grouting is the fix.

Why Grout Gets Dark in a Sanur Villa

Sanur sits right on the Indian Ocean, so every surface gets a fine film of salt and moisture several times a day. That constant dampness feeds mould and mildew inside porous grout joints within weeks if nothing is done about them.

During the rainy season (roughly November to April) the humidity stays above 80 % for months. Add soap and shampoo residue from showers, and a thin biofilm builds up that traps dirt and turns white grout grey or black.

Older villas here were often finished with standard cement grout that was never sealed. After five or ten years the binder weakens, the joint goes soft, and it absorbs water like a sponge. If your villa uses well water rather than PDAM supply, iron and manganese traces can also leave rusty stains inside the pores.

Deep-Cleaning Existing Grout

Start by sweeping or vacuuming loose debris out of the joints. Then mix a paste of baking soda and a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (3 %). Apply it along the grout lines with an old toothbrush or a narrow grout brush, let it sit 10–15 minutes, scrub gently, and rinse with clean water. For heavier staining you can use a dedicated tile-and-grout cleaner; follow the dilution ratio on the label exactly.

Work in one direction so you do not drag dirty water back over cleaned sections. Rinse thoroughly – leftover cleaning solution will keep attracting dust.

Important safety note: never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or any other acid-based product. The reaction releases toxic chlorine gas. If you smell strong fumes while working near a pool or spa area, stop immediately, ventilate the space, and call a professional before continuing.

  • Sweep or vacuum joints first to remove grit that scratches tile during scrubbing.
  • Use a soft-bristle grout brush, not steel wool, especially on polished or natural-stone tiles.
  • Test any cleaner on a hidden corner first; some products etch unsealed marble or terrazzo.
  • Rinse until the water runs clear, then dry the area with a squeegee or towel.

When to Re-Grout Instead of Just Cleaning

If the old grout crumbles between your fingers, has lost more than half its depth, or shows deep cracks that let water through to the substrate, cleaning will only buy you a few weeks. At that point the joint needs to be removed and replaced.

The basic process: score out the old material with a grout removal tool (a small oscillating saw works well for 3 mm joints), vacuum the dust, dampen the clean joint so it does not suck moisture from the new mix, press in fresh grout at an angle, wipe the tile surface with a damp sponge after about 15–20 minutes, and allow 48–72 hours before getting the area wet again.

In Sanur timing matters. Try to schedule re-grouting during a dry spell. If heavy rain is forecast within two days, postpone – the new grout needs consistent air-drying to cure properly, and a downpour on a rooftop bathroom or pool deck can wash the binder out before it sets.

Choosing the Right Materials

For joints up to 3 mm use unsanded (smooth) grout; anything wider benefits from sanded grout because the aggregate adds strength and reduces shrinkage cracks. In high-traffic areas like pool surrounds or kitchen floors, a polymer-modified grout resists cracking better than plain cement.

Once the new grout has cured fully (usually 7–14 days depending on product), apply a penetrating sealer rated for your tile type. A good sealer will make water bead on the joint instead of soaking in, which slows mould return dramatically in our humidity.

You can pick up all of this at hardware stores along Jl. Danau Poso or in the Kuta/Badung wholesale markets if you want to compare options. Bring a photo of your existing tiles so the shop can confirm compatibility with natural stone versus ceramic.

Keeping Grout Light Between Deep Cleans

A quick wipe-down after each shower keeps soap film from settling into the pores. Once a month, run a soft brush over the joints with plain warm water – it takes five minutes and stops biofilm from establishing.

Re-seal the grout every 12 months, or sooner if water no longer beads on the surface. During the rainy season, check bathroom exhaust fans and any open-air pool deck drainage; standing water against a wall is the fastest way to re-darken a freshly cleaned joint.

If you notice the grout going grey again within two or three months of cleaning, that usually means the underlying material is too degraded for surface treatment. At that stage, send me a clear photo and I will tell you whether a full re-grout is worth doing or if the tile itself needs attention first.

Questions

How often should I seal tile grout in a Bali villa?

Once a year is a good baseline given our humidity and salt air. If your villa has an open-air bathroom or pool surround exposed to direct rain, check the sealer every six months by sprinkling a few drops of water on the joint – if it soaks in quickly rather than beading up, it is time to re-apply.

Can I use household bleach on my pool-tile grout?

A diluted chlorine solution can lift mould, but only if the tile is glazed ceramic and not natural stone. Never mix it with any other cleaner, and rinse thoroughly. For pool-area tiles that also carry anti-slip coatings, test a small patch first; some bleaches strip the texture over repeated use. When in doubt, ask before pouring anything down the drain near the pool.

My villa was built over ten years ago and the grout is crumbling everywhere. Is re-grouting realistic?

Yes, and it is very common in older Sanur villas. The key is removing all loose material first so the new grout bonds to solid edges. Depending on the area (one bathroom versus a full pool deck), the job ranges from a half-day to two days of work. Send photos and I will give you an honest assessment of scope and what needs to happen.
